"I hate you! I hope you know that Jack! I HATE you!!"
The woman continued screaming, her face red with the anger that filled her up to her boiling point. She pointed an accusing finger at the man before her, who was just staring in stunned shock. He slowly held his hands out and walked towards his asstranged wife, hoping to calm her down enough so he could understand what was going on.
"Don't touch me...Don't touch me don't you FUCKING TOUCH ME!"Kate screamed and picked up a vase, throwing it at him as hard as she could. He ducked and the glass shattered against the wall behind him. "Get away from me!"She said and turned, running towards the door. She stopped only to thow it open before running out into the thick snow covered yard. Her silver sweater and brown curls instantly became flecked with the small ice crystles as they fell the the earth. Her eyes filled with tears at what she had done and for a moment, only for a moment she looked back into the house she had lived for two years with the man she loved.
That argument had been over a year ago and it still replayed fresh in her mind every night before she fell asleep beside the man who put her down, the man who reminded her so much of her step-father, Wayne, yet was different from him in so many ways. To this day she still couldn't figure out what had caused her to start the fight. She knew what it had been over, the man beside her had caused it without even knowing it.
She turnd her head to watch him sleep, his dirty blonde hair covering his face like a blanket. She envied how well he could sleep, not having the guilt she did, not knowing what had happend to cause such a marrage to tumble down into nothing.
Sawyer didn't know what he did by sleeping with her. He didn't know she had been married to Jack, he didn't know that the guilt she would feel for those few late nights she had spent with him would destroy the only god thing she had left. How could he know? She never told him, even after the separation she never told him about what he had done.
He voice continued in her mind, replaying how she had falsly clamed to hate Jack. Wishing he would have yelled it back so maybe, just maybe she could have lessened her guilt. No, he had followed her out into the yard and begged her to stay. Got down on his knees and pleaded with her. She had simply driven off and never looked back.
Unable to sleep, Kate sat up and slid out of the bed, glancing down at Sawyer once more. She sighed and turned to her clothes, folded neatly on the dresser, and grabbed them, getting dressed as fast and quiet as she could. She wouldn't feel guilty about leaving him, she ofted did. He never really cared if she was gone by morning, he had to many things to worry about anyway, he knew Kate was no house wife, he knew sometimes she'd leave and only come back because she wanted to get drunk. So, continueing to be quiet, she crept down the hall and grabbed her keys before heading outside and climbing into her car. Just like the nigh she had left Jack, there was snow covering the ground in every direction, a horrible reminder. She would probably never look at snow the same way again either.
After a few deep breaths, she backed out of the driveway and began driving down the road, not thinking about the road like she should have been.
Her windshield became clouded over from the heat of her body inside and she leaned forward and clean it off when she could only see the side of the truck ahead of her. Second later she made impact. Her car lurched her forward further and she could feel the glass breaking around her, shattering. She watched her own body it the side of the truck and slump down on the hood of her car. the only thing Kate could think about was how bad the pain was. Her body was on fire, her head, her arms and legs, it was like living in a hell on earth. When her lungs were filled with air once more she let out a scream of agony, not moving from her hood.
The driver of the truck climbed out in shock, watching her writh in anguish on the hood of her car, her windshied bustd out. Blood covered every inch of her face from the cuts around her head. Both of her arms, having been out inront of her to try and stop her body from hitting the truck, were twisted at horrible angles, he was sure that he could even see some bone ripping the arm of her sweatshirt.
Not waiting a moment longer, the man pulled out his cellphone and dialed 911. After speeking with the woman on the othr end of the phone, he hung up and ran to the hood of her car, his eyes going wide when he realized who the woman was being her mask of blood.
"Oh my God..."Jack breathed in shock, his eyes misting over with tears of horrible worry as he stared down at his wife, who stopped screaming and was now sobbing hard. "Kate...Oh my God."He walked closer and held out his shaking hands, for once inhis life not knowing what to do. He was scared to death to touch her, to hurt her in anyway.
The ambulance finally arrived after five minutes and loaded her into the back before Jack could also climb in and sit beside her, tears pouring down his cheeks as he watched the woman he love continue to sob while the paramedics rushed to help her as best they could.
It was only after they were driven awaym did the police locate all of the empty pill bottles on he floorboard of Kate's car.
Two days in the hospital. That's how long Kate spent before she began to show signs of waking up. She winced and lulled her head back and forth before her eyelids fluttered open and the real world flooded back to her. The first thing, the only thing that she saw in her room was the person sitting beside her bed, asleep with his lead leaned forward on her lap and his fingers wrapped around her casted hand.
She shifted and moaned quietly, enough to rouse the man from his dream and make him open his eyes. He slowly sat up with a sigh, looking down in silence before Kate moaned again and he realized that her first noise hadn't been in his head. His head snapped up and he leaned forward, closing to her.
"Oh Kate..."He said, shaking his head. He studied her face in silence, wishing he could just go back and change the way things had happened. He needed her back, he needed her back to keep him stable, to keep him sane.
"Don't look at me.'Kate pleaded, turning her face away from him, too ashamed of what had happened a year ago to even have him look at her the way he was, longingly, so needy. "Go home Jack. Please."
"What?"Jack asked in shock, shaking his head. "No. I'm not leaving you here alone. Not now Kate."He leaned further forward. "Please, let me stay here, let me help you. I-I miss you Kate. I love you."
Kate's eyes teared over and she bit back a small sob. "Stop it."She told him. "Please just stop it. You have to go home. You can't love me."She turned her head and looked at him. "Hate me."She pleaded. "I'm done hurting you so just hate me, say it. Say you hate me then go home and be happy. Please Jack."
Jack only stared as if she had asked him to jump out of a plane without a parachute. He shook his head and looked her body up and down. "I'm not going to say I hate you."He said. "Because I don't. I love you Kate." Silence pursued for an hour or so before Jack spoke up again. "Why did you leave me?"He asked softly.
Kate didn't reply at first, then shook her head, beginning to cry again. "I lied to you Jack."she replied hesitantly.
"What?"Jack asked, a little shocked. "Well..what was it? I'm sure that we could have worked it out. If you would have just told me we could have..."
"I slept with Sawyer!" Kate interupted him, turning away from him in shame and crying harder. "I.... I slept with Sawyer"She repeated quieter.
"How...How could you do that?"Jack asked, shaking his head. "Kate, how could you sleep with Sawyer?"
Kate shook her head, looking away from in silence, feeling horrible and guilty and like the ultiment scum of the earth. "Please, just go."she repeated despretly. She didn't want to face this, not now not ever. She didn't want to face him, she couldn't.
"Answer me."Jack frowned at her. "We're married Kate. Married. Doesn't that mean anything to you? How the hell could you go behind my back and sleep with him?! Are you even sorry about it at least? Hey.... Look at me damn it."
Kate looked over at him again, her face scrunching up with tears as she started to cry again. "Yes I'm sorry!"She shouted at him, sobbing. "I'm sorry it happened. I was mad at you...you were always at work and..."She choked on a sob and lifted one of her hands to her face, stpping and staring at he cast before crying harder. "We drank....alot."she looked away from him. "I didn't mean..... it wasn't supposed to go.....that...f-far."
Jack got to his feet with a harsh exhale. "You didn't mean for it to go that far?"He asked. It was coming back again, Sarah, she was beginning to remind him of Sarah... except one detail. "Kate we have a child! We have a two year old at home right now who doesn't even know you!! Did you want that? To not know your own son, Kate? Don't you miss Justin at all?"
"Of course I miss him!"Kate shot back angrily, looking over at him. "He's my son Jack I miss him more then i miss anything else. My baby doesn't know me because of a stupid whisky bottle!"
Jack stared down at her, looking unsure of her honestly. He took a deep breath nd resumed his seat beside her bed, rubbing his forehead. "Claire's whatching him."He commented. "He wasn't in the truck with me." His doubts of her truthfulness vanished when he could see how she seemed to relax at that news. "There's still time Kate."He added. "He wouldn't remember any of this is you just come home with me."
Kate swallowed several times, trying to keep her breathing level and stop herself from sobbing once more. She nodded mutly, just wanting things to go back to normal again. "I'm......Jack I..."She shook her head.
"I know."Jack mumbled, feeling as if this was his fault. Second wife, second betrayl, there was obviously something wrong with him. "I'm sorry too."He told her. "I could have kept this from happening, I should have spent less time working..." They both fell silent, avoiding eachothers gaze. After a long moment Jack stood and sighed again. "Look."He said. ":When they let you out, I want you go come home Kate."
Kate noded, wanting very much to go home with him. "I"m sorry."She repeated again.
Jack paused then leaned down, kissing her lips gently. "We'll fix this, I promise."
