Bio: Kate was born in 1977 and raised in Iowa. Up until sometime, she was raised by her step-father {whom she believed to be her real father} Sam Austen and her mother Diane Janssen. Sam was replace with Wayne whom was Kate's actual father.
Wayne was hated by Kate due to his abuse towards her mother and sexual advances towards herself.
Her best friend growing up was Tom Brennan. In 1989, they buried a time capsule together that contained: a tape, a toy airplane, and a baseball.
For Sam's birthday, Kate was making him a scrap book and got pictures from when he was overseas. The dates on the pictures dated back four months before Kate was even born. Figuring out that Wayne was her father, she was appalled. Deciding to help her mother out, she led a drunken Wayne to bed one night then blew him up.
Her mother turned her in.
Kate escaped Marshall Edward Mars many times. Edward has first captured when she was trying to buy a train ticket to Tallahassee. While he was driving her back, a black horse ran out into the road and caused them to crash. Edward was injured, but Kate ran away unharmed.
After two months, she decided that she wanted to see her mother again. On the way there her car broke down and she met Cassidy, who was trying to con people with necklaces. When the con didn't work, Kate helped Cassidy and Cassidy offered her help back.
So together, they were able to help Kate see her mother again at her mother's work place. While there, Diane believed Kate blew Wayne up for her own selfish reasons. Diane said that she loved Wayne. She told Kate that she would not turn her in this time, but next time she would scream for help.
Later on, Kate got a letter that told her her mother was dying of cancer. Wanting to see her once more, she returned to Iowa again. She managed to get the help of Tom, who turned out to be a doctor at the hospital that Diane was in. He managed to sneak her in, but when Diane saw her she did just as she said she would and screamed for help.
A few security officers came and Kate ran from the hospital, quickly followed by Tom. Several times she told him to get out of the car, but he refused to listen. He was then shot and killed as the police attempted to get Kate. Kate managed to flee from the car, leaving Tom's toy plane behind.
Kate took on the name of Monica and moved to Florida where she met a police man named Kevin Callis. Not telling him who she really was, the two of them got married. She stayed with him for awhile, then called Edward and asked him to stop chasing. Kevin then booked them a vacation to overseas where Kate knew she would need a passport. Not wanting her secret to be revealed like that, she told Kevin the truth then drugged him and left, leaving his mother's locket with him.
Later, she took on the name of Maggie. She had been told by Edward that Tom's toy plane was in a safety deposit box in New Mexico. So she went to New Mexico and got a bunch of guys to help her rob the bank. At first she posed as an ordinary civilian. But when the one man, Jason, was about to shoot the manager, she showed that she was also involved. Instead of letting him hurt the manager, she shot him in the leg then also shot others in their little group. She got the toy plane and took off.
After that, she stayed for four months at a farm owned by a man named Ray Mullen. After awhile, he found out who she was and that there was a $23,000 reward for her. He figured he could use that money to pay off his morgage debts. When he attempted to turn her in, but instead had his own life endangered. Choosing to save his life, Kate helped in and was then caught by Edward, which led her to be on the plane.

Pain was hard to avoid in her house. Whether it was physical or emotional, it always seemed to show it's ugly face to her. The hurt was ignored by almost everyone else by now. Wayne caused the physical pain and Diane ignored it. Diane caused the emotial pain and Wayne urged it on and rubbed it in. The neighbors pretended they didn't hear anything at night when Wayne came home. The teachers blamed her bad behavior on her instead of her home life.
After awhile pain was gone, but it always left its mark to prove it had been there and that eventually it would come back. A bruise here, a scar there, only the outer remnants. What was outside was the easiest to cover up and forget about. Unless you bumped on the bruises, you'd completely forget it was there. Yeah, it hurt bad for awhile, but it always faded.
This was the kind of pain Wayne put her in. He pushed her around and slammed her against things. He left bruises on every single part of her small body. She hated him. Hate was a strong word, but the only one that could describe what was felt towards this awful man.
What was left on the inside, now that was the worst. You couldn't forget that it was there. Just like the bruises, you could hide it from others; but was on the inside you could never hide from yourself too. It seemed to always be getting bumped by something. Certain words. Certain people. Certain sights. Something was always making it hurt. This hurt never faded either. This hurt just got bigger and bigger. No matter how many times you cried, how many times you told yourself it was okay; this hurt just didn't want to leave you alone.
This was the kind of pain that Diane inflicted. It was a lot easier to do than physical came. Most of the time it came from Diane refusing to cuddle with her. From her refusing to take care of her when she was sick or calm her when she had a nightmare. The kind of pain that made her feel unwanted and worthless. But not that kind of pain to make her hate her. Instead it was the kind to make her try harder even though it resulted in even more pain.
The shouting downstairs had woken her from her sleep. The bright red numbers on the clock blinked 11:42, informing her that she had slept to long. Her alarm had never gone off at 10:30. Flinching at the sound of smashing glass downstairs, Kate sat up in her bed. There was no time for sleepiness; for yawning and rubbing her eyes or trying to figure out what was going on. Every sense in her body was alarming her that she needed to be up and ready. It was too late to leave now.
It was hard to understand what Wayne was yelling about, his words slurred; proving that he was drunk. He was always drunk. Diane wasn't crying, but instead yelling back. That might have been a good sign that he wasn't being quite as violent tonight.
The light in the hallway flicked on, showing it's self through the cracks of Kate's door. Pulling the blankets up to her chin, the thirteen year old tried to look for a place to hide. She was too big to fit under her bed now. Wayne had broken the doors off of her closet. Her room had nowhere that he couldn't find her.
Heavy footsteps stomped up the stairs, causing her to tremble. No. She couldn't tremble. She had to hide the hurt from him. She had to hide the fear. It only amused him. The footsteps got closer and stopped at her door. There was silence. In the blink of an eye, the door swung open, the knob lodging itself into the light blue wall. Her green eyes widened as he walked towards her bed then stopped in front of her.
"What the hell do you think you're doin' awake, Girl?"
"I just came back from the bathroom." Kate was good at thinking up quick lies. It was something that had been passed down from her mother.
Reaching forward, Wayne grabbed her by the wrist. "You're lucky I don't beat you to a pulp," he spat. He pulled her out of bed, causing her to stumble forward. "I want you out of my damn house."
Kate reluctantly followed him as he dragged her out of the room and through the hall. Relief began to wash over her as he led her downstairs and to the front door. She could run. Once outside, she got ready for him to let go.
Wayne stopped by the stairs, giving her a look of disgust. "You can sleep out here tonight. You better be here when I get up in the morning."
Who was he kidding. He wouldn't be up until late in the afternoon.
Wayne gave her a shove then headed inside.
Too small to withstand the strength of his shove, she tumbled down the four stairs and onto the sidewalk before. It wasn't as bad as the pain she usually felt, but tears still flowed down her freckled cheeks. Blood began to leak from her scraped up arm and side and she couldn't push herself up.
Reaching her good arm into her pocket, she pulled out her cell phone then hit the first person on her speed dial before holding the phone up to her ear. There was only one person she called in times like these.
Jack.
