After attending Columbia University and then graduating from UCLA medical school faster than anyone else in his class-a year ahead. Jack worked at St. Sebastian Hospital as a neurosurgery resident in the same field as his father, who was an attending physician in that department. He operated on a car crash victim named Sarah, whose spine had been damaged in the accident. Jack was convinced that surgery would not fix her paralysis and told her so. A short time later, whilst brooding about the upcoming operation, he briefly meets Desmond. After the operation, Jack was sure that it was a failure, but he soon learned that Sarah could move her toes and regained feeling in her legs.
Jack and Sarah, on their wedding dayJack and Sarah married a little over two years later, with Marc Silverman being the best man.
The marriage was quickly strained under the pressure of Jack's work schedule, which caused them to see little of each other. Jack and his father later worked on a patient named Angelo. His daughter, Gabriela, said she came to Jack for help because she had heard of the miracle he had "performed" on Sarah. Angelo died of heart failure a few months later on the operating table after Jack successfully removed a tumor, and on the way back to his car, Jack met Gabriela. They ended up kissing, but Jack stopped he, then confessed to his wife what happened and she, in turn, told him that she had been cheating on him because of his workaholic tendencies and his obsession for fixing things. Sarah then left Jack.
Jack bitterly contested the divorce and became obsessed with who Sarah had been cheating on him with. He began stalking her attempting to discover the identity of her lover. Jack eventually began to believe that his father had been having an affair with Sarah. Jack barged into his father's AA meeting and attacked him after it was said that he had been sober for 50 days. After Jack was arrested, Sarah bailed him out saying that his father called her while drunk. Jack never discovered who her lover was.
Two months before the crash, Jack's father operated on a pregnant woman while under the influence of alcohol, and when a nurse told Jack this, he relieved his father and took over the surgery. He was unable to repair the damage and the woman died. Christian pressured Jack to sign a report saying the woman was beyond medical assistance, but Jack later learned that the woman was pregnant at the time of her death and accused his father of causing the fatal damage by severing the woman's hepatic artery.
Jack was sent to chase after his father in Sydney and soon came to discover that he suffered a massive heart attack and died due to alcoholic poisoning and was bringing his body back when the plane crashed.
Roleplay example: From an On-The Run with Kate RP, One on one:
A shadow of a man lay motionless on the floor, staring up at the taunting moonlight through the window. The shadow's owner sat slumped in an overstuffed couch, surrounded by clutter and empty take-out boxes. He heaved a sigh and stared at the undrunken bottle of liquor in his hands. He couldn't bring himself to drink away his pain like his father had. He couldn't bring himself to do much of anything anymore. There was a banging noise next door, like the sound of shoving something against a wall. Great. He'd brought /another/ girl home. Jack rubbed the bridge of his nose and headed down the hall, to the bathroom, splashing his face with the cool water. He glanced up to stare at the worn down man before him. Lines were etched into his sunburned forehead, thanks to spending many hours running around the neighborhood trying to clear his head, broken brown eyes sat atop sleepless nights, and a few water droplets clung to his greying stubble. How easily he'd fallen apartw ith just three words.
"Where are they? What've you done to them?!" Jack had yelled at Ben, shaking with rage, restrained only by the glass barrier between them once more.
"They're dead. All of them." Ben said calmly, seemingly indifferent to Jack's rage, except for his eyes. His eyes shone with satisfaction of shocking Jack.
"What about Kate?" Jack had growled, his breathing halted by the thought of all them dead.
"You think she's exempt from it all?" Ben had replied coldy, the corners of his mouth twitching with the urge to smile.
With that Jack's world had shattered around him. A few weeks later he was sent off of the island to somehow recover and continue his life. He'd gotten back his job at the hospital, no questions asked. That happened to be all he did. Work and come home and sulk.
He shuffled to his bedroom when he heard screaming. It was quiet at first but quite soon it was louder. He peered out his window to see his neighbor, Jason or something like that, beating on some woman. That son of a....Jack ran down the hall and flung open his door before racing across the lawn to Jason's house.
Jack checked the knob. Locked. He took a few steps back before kicking down the door. "HEY! GET OFF HER!" Jack hollered running towards Jason to stop him.
